Definition of a music video
A filmed or videotaped rendition of a recorded song, often portraying musicians performing the song or including visual images interpreting the lyrics.
Music videos come in a range of different styles such as narrative, performance and concept. However due to different technology and artist styles these types of music videos can cross over. I believe that a music video is similar to a short film. For example most music videos will present a story that the audience will interpret and this is also what a short film does. I believe that music videos present different ideas and an artist can achieve many different character and storyline's throughout their career within their music videos.
Andrew Goodwin's theory of music videos:
1) They tend to often include a demonstration of typical genre characteristics. For example many women dancing dressed in provocative clothing would be typically featured in a rap video whereas dance routines are normally present in pop girl band videos.
2) Intertextuality is present within music videos and films e.g. horror films and metal music videos and pop videos with rom-coms. Another example of this would be Destiny's Child and 'Charlie's Angels'.
3) demands on the artist/band from record labels for close ups within music videos of lead singers and artists.
4) An artist typically has their own visual style. For example the way Lady Gaga dresses makes her noticeable within the industry.
5) Music videos tend to have frequent references and notions to the female body. This is portrayed through the use of props and camera angles within the video.
