2)Norah Jones: Don't Know Why
Norah Jones' music video also represents the acoustic genre very well. Firstly the location of the video is a beach, natural and pleasing to the eye. The mise en scene is nature orientated and the feature of the endless sea could be read as her endless love for the person the song is about. The focus of the video is on the artist herself and not on materialistic features. Close ups of the artist are present throughout the duration on the video. The song is a romantic warm song about a loved one, a particular feature of acoustic/indie videos. The video has been edited to enhance the natural light at the beach, another feature of this genre.
The artist is shown playing the piano from 1:44 to 2:43 with minimal changes to the shot types or what the artist is doing in the video. The visuals then go back to the artist at the beach and end with her walking towards the sea, again fitting with the natural location many of these videos include. The artist has been represented in a natural wholesome way in the fact that she has minimal make-up and everyday clothing on. The pace of the visuals fits with the song (slow paced) again a feature of this genre.
3)Gabrielle Aplin - Home
The music video to Gabrielle Aplin 'Home' links well to the acoustic/indie genre of music video.
The opening diagetic sound represent the idea of not having materialistic things (the artists' car is taken and she had nothing). The opening location looks to be a wasteland, this being an extremely natural setting as man has not built anything there yet. Within this scene editing has been used for the sky in making it a pastel purple colour. The various locations in the video are simple, the motel the artist ends up staying in is minimal and not flashy at all, again a feature of this genre. The lyrics link directly with the visuals in the fact that it as about being home and the artist is trying to get back to hers.
The artist is represented as being wholesome and likeable, she seems nice and slightly innocent in some parts.
Another convention of this genre included in this video would be the scene when the artist is playing her guitar, this being featured in many of these videos and furthermore the performance that the artist ends up doing for money is a small and intimate one with few viewers, that is situated in a small bar. This ends with the diagetic sound of the audience clapping.
There are close up shots to fit with the demand from the record labels/institutions that also show what that artist looks like.
Minimal make up is used on the artist presenting her in her 'natural' state when she is laying on the bed and the pace of the song links with the visuals as some shots are slower, another feature of indie/acoustic music videos.
4) Ben Howard: Old Pine
Another example of an acoustic/indie music video would be Ben Howard 'Old Pine'.
This relates to this genre as again from the location. It is a very natural setting in a field at the start, leading to the sea, a woods, what looks to be a dirt road, a fire and various cliffs, all of these are aesthetically pleasing and the editing has been used to enhance natural daylight. The focus of the video is on the natural setting and the artist himself, using a range of shots from mid shots to close ups and establishing shots. The colours are all warm feeling within the video.
The pace of the visuals fits with the song as they are slower paced however speed up with the time of the music. A lot of instrumental has been used in this video, a feature that many indie/acoustic videos include.
