The first music video I am going to analyse is Beyonce's 'If I were a boy'. I think this video is a representation of a really good narrative styled video. The story Beyonce is portraying in her video is of a relationship where one of the people are not treated as well as they should be, yet it is an attempt to open the eyes of the other person and to make them see what they are doing and how they would feel if they were in thier shoes. The video also includes the diagetic sound of Beyonce and her love interest talking at the beginning and towards the end, I believe this to be quite an effective addition to the video as it helps to explain the purpose of the video, although the narrative style is easy to understand, this element further explains the message at hand. I also really like this video as I think the black and white theme ties in well with the theme of this song (heartbreak and sadness), and is also very different to her other music videos.
The camera angles and shots that are mainly present in this video rage from close ups to show the expression of the artist, mid shots show both of the characters within the video and establishing shots (for example outside the cafe) so that the audience gains an understanding of the location the video is in.
The mise en scene within Beyonce's video is in America and the costumes that are present represent the two different jobs that the characters hold within their day to day life.
The editing in this video is typical of pace editing: The visuals fit with the pace of the song.
Representation has also been featured in this video. The representation of men within this video is negative in the fact that the lyrics are stating that they do not care how they hurt their partners with the visuals linking deeply with this in the way the been presented to be heartless. The male gender has also been represented negatively within this video due to the lyrics stating that their is a double standard when it comes to sexual promiscuity by men and women.
The representation of women within this video is that they are typically over shadowed by the male gender. This can be inferred in the visuals where the female character would not go out with their friends as they were upset, yet the male character did. However this video still includes as sense of sexualisation of the female body. I believe this is present when Beyonce is getting changed, I feel that this has been included so that the video still applies to the male gender, as do many of her other videos.
This video shows characteristics from Goodwin's theory of music videos in the fact that there are many close ups of the artist in the performance. Lighting has also been used cleverly in this video during the part when the artist gets into the car towards the start of the video. The lighting has been used with the reflection of the trees covering her colleague. This is representing that the focus of the video is about her and not him. Furthermore lighting has been used in the club. The lighting is dark and the location has a lot of shadows. Although this is typical of a club, this has been used to represent the actions that are going on with the characters and how it is wrong and should not be seen.
Example of a close up shot of the artist with the black and white editing. This would be included in an aim to please the demand for close ups from the producers/record labels and to add to the overall feel of the video (sadness and heartbreak).
An example of where the lighting has been used to reiterate that the focus of the video is on the female character and not the male. The trees are covering the male whereas the female is still visable.
The second video I am going to analyse is Rihanna's 'Pour It Up'
I have chosen to analyse this music video as I feel it conforms to a range of genre conventions.
For example Laura Mulvey stated that within music videos, women are likely to be an object of the 'male gaze' in which sexualising of the female body is profoundly evident making their status simply an object.
I feel that this video conform to Laura Mulvey's theory as throughout the video the dancers are dressed, and dancing extremely provocatively. I feel that the lyrics at the beginning of this song link to this idea also. This is because the part where Rhianna states 'strip clubs' is a typically male location where women are viewed, again fitting with the idea that women are males' objects. The actual artist herself fits with this theory on music videos as she herself is dressed in next to nothing and most of the visuals are featured around her body.
Another feature that this video entails is the showing of materailistic features. This is found in many pop/hip hop music videos and is present where Rihanna is shown on a throne holding and throwing money, wearing a fur coat and seems to be covered in diamonds and gold.
The video has been editing using dark colours, in particular a green smoke. This is to reflect the location of the video and the lyrics that are featured in the song. The editing of the waterfall in the background fits with the wet look that the dancers/artist have been styled with again a focus on their bodies.
The third video I am going to be analysing is Alli Simpson's 'why I'm single'.
This video is a brilliant example of a teenage pop music video. The artist is situated in her bedroom and seems to be telling the story (which happen to be the lyrics) through a pink phone presumably to her friend. This features the colour pink, representing the girly feel to the video and also a sense of innocence and being young. The fact that she is singing the lyrics into the phone is relatable as many teenage girls will have spoken about heartbreak on the phone to their friends. Throughout the video the artist is seen wearing many different colour pinks and holding a teddy bear. This again represents the sense of innocence that the video is conveying which relates to the lyrics that are stating she is single through no fault of her own and has been hurt by her previous relationships, the teddy bear also represents her age.
The video shows intertextuality with the lyrics and the visuals as the artist draws 'why I'm single' over a picture of her ex boyfriend. This promotes the track and is a reference to the title of the song and what the lyrics are about.
Throughout the video the artist conveys a typical teenage girl by dressing up, having fun and looking through her wardrobe, this makes the artist and video relatable to the teenage girl it is intended for.
